Adult Learning and Fire Service Project (ALFS)
Adults with learning disabilities are taking part in specially designed lessons to teach them important safety advice to give them greater independence in their day to day lives.
The Adult Learning and Fire Service Project (ALFS) is a partnership between Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service and Oxfordshire Skills and Learning Service.
ALFS is a semi practical course where the learners attend classroom based lessons at the Oxford Adult Learning Centre in Cowley and get to practice their newly learnt skills using the safety scenarios at the Franklin Vermeulen Safety Centre.
The course covers
- Fire safety
- Road safety
- First aid
- Personal safety
- Internet safety
- Scams and rouge traders
Adam, a learner on ALFS said: “Learning about road safety was helpful as I learnt how to keep safe. It helps me because I walk on my own a lot.”
Thomas, a learner on ALFS said: “It is teaching me a lot about safety in the home and is preparing me for when I move out from living with a carer and what the hazards are in the home.”
The ALFS pilot is being reviewed and the project team would like to take the course forward and expand the course later so it is an accredited course for the learners to attend.
