Children and Young People

We work with young people in fire safety education and youth diversion; in line with the Fire and Rescue Service Strategy for Children and Young People 2006-2010.
This aims to:
- engage actively with children and young people
- prevent and reduce fire crime and fire-setting by children and young people
- divert children and young people from fire crime and associated anti-social behaviour
- educate children and young people in fire safety skills and responsible citizenship
- ensure that fire and rescue service staff working with children and young people are effective and professional
- identify and disseminate good practice in working with children and young people.
The focus for our work in Oxfordshire is also provided through the county council’s Children and Young People’s Plan 2006-2009. The plan covers the age ranges 0-19 and, for some groups of young people, up to 25 years.
The aim of the plan is to assist every child and young person to receive the help they need to:
- Enjoy good physical and mental health
- Be protected from harm and neglect and grow up able to look after themselves
- Achieve educational success and enjoyment, have good opportunities for play and leisure and develop self-confidence and life skills for a creative and positive adulthood
- Make a positive contribution to community and society
- Live free from poverty, achieve their potential and make the most of their lives.
School Visits
We visit schools to talk about fire safety with classes at all Key Stages. These talks are tailored to audience requirements and also adapted for classes with special educational needs.
Email: 365alive@oxfordshire.gov.uk to arrange a school visit.
Road Safety
We work with the county council’s road safety team to provide a wide range of road safety advice to children and young people.

Junior Citizen
We work on a partnership programme that runs for 13 weeks of the year to provide safety education to Year 6 schoolchildren. The children participate in active scenarios and experience simulated dangers in a safe, supervised environment.

School Leavers
We work with the Oxfordshire Education Business Partnership to provide school leavers with advice on preparing for life after school. Much of the activity focuses on the world of work and the skills needed to get a job and get on in the workplace, including interview techniques and how to apply for a job.

Fire Cadets
Units have been running since 1993 in Banbury, Kidlington, Oxford, Watlington and Witney. Cadets are aged 12 -18 and they participate in activities such as ladder, pump and hose drills, first aid, understanding fire science, risk awareness and community fire safety.

Fire-setter counselling
We help to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour through this intervention scheme which aims to educate children and young people who have already shown an interest in fire, or those who may be likely to.

Future activities
We hope to extend our Fire Cadet Programme across the county’s schools and offer them the opportunity to participate in a BTEC course. This will provide tangible benefits for the children, the school and the community.
We will keep improving our services by involving children and young people in our planning and decision-making so that we can provide what they need to improve their safety awareness and life skills.
