Family escape house fire

Oxfordshire County Council Fire & Rescue Service were called to reports of a house fire at Whitethorn Way, Blackbird Leys, at 2:50pm hours on Friday 10 February 2012.

Two Fire Engines, one from Slade Park Fire Station and one from Rewley Road Fire Station attended the incident.

On arrival, crews found the property to be smoke-logged but with no obvious cause. Following some investigation, it was found to be caused by a plastic picture frame being left on top of a fixed mains gas fire, causing it to melt.

Fortunately, the occupants were able to escape without injury due to their working smoke alarms. Firefighters ventilated the property and offered advice to the occupants.

Firefighter Nik Brown said, “This was a good example of smoke alarms working as intended, alerting the occupants and allowing them to safely escape without harm.”
