Saved by a smoke alarm

Crews from Oxfordshire County Council Fire & Rescue Service were called just before 7am 7 January 2012 to a flat fire in the Barton area of Oxford.

A man was alerted to a fire in his cooker by a smoke alarm in his flat at William Morris Court enabling him to escape and call the Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire engines from the Slade and Rewley Road fire stations arrived on the scene rapidly and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were able to deal with the incident safely.

Watch Manager Greg Bishop from Blue Watch at the Slade Fire station said, "This incident again highlights the importance of having working smoke alarms in people's homes".
