Wood burning stove sparks fire

Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue service was called to reports of a fire at Forsters Lane, Cumnor at 5:25pm on Tuesday 31 January 2012.

Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service were called by a neighbour who was alerted by a smoke alarm inside the property.

Two fire engines from Oxford attended the property to find a small fire in the ground floor lounge. On arrival the crews were faced with a heavily smoke logged building and a small fire around the log burner.

Crews immediately tackled the fire using Breathing Apparatus and high pressure hose reel water jets, with the fire being extinguished quickly.

The fire is believed to have spread to wood stacked next to the log burner, and Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service would like to remind people not to store materials near a fire that could cause fire spread.

SM Bourke says: “The owners had a working smoke alarm that alerted their neighbour. If this had not been the case then we could have been faced with a serious, fully developed fire. I urge anyone with a log burner or open fire to be careful about items that they place nearby.”

Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to:

  • fit working smoke alarms and test them weekly
  • make a fire escape plan
  • should a fire occur, get out, stay out, and get the fire and rescue service out
